Wing Commander (horse)

Wing Commander was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1955. He was sired by War Admiral, winner of the 1937 Triple Crown, out of the mare Whirlabout. Wing Commander was owned and bred by Samuel D. Riddle, also the owner of Man o' War.

While Wing Commander did not achieve the same level of fame as his sire or Riddle's other champion, he was a successful racehorse. He notably won the Withers Stakes in 1958, a prestigious race for three-year-olds at Belmont Park. He also placed in several other important stakes races.

After retiring from racing, Wing Commander stood at stud. Although he didn't produce any champions on par with his own sire, he did sire some notable runners, contributing to the broader Thoroughbred gene pool. His lineage connects him to some of the most significant horses in American racing history. He represents a lineage link between two legendary horses, War Admiral and Man o' War, though often overshadowed by their achievements.
