Whipsnade

Whipsnade, officially known as ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, is a zoo and safari park located near Whipsnade, a village in Bedfordshire, England. It is one of two zoos (the other being ZSL London Zoo) owned by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. Whipsnade Zoo is the UK's largest zoo, covering 600 acres (240 hectares).

Opened in 1931, Whipsnade Zoo was originally envisioned as a country retreat for animals from London Zoo. It offers a more natural environment for its inhabitants, with large enclosures and open paddocks.

The zoo's animal collection is extensive, featuring a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Notable species include elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, giraffes, and penguins. Whipsnade Zoo actively participates in conservation breeding programmes for endangered species.

Whipsnade Zoo is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across the UK and internationally. It provides educational opportunities about wildlife conservation and offers a range of visitor experiences, including animal talks, demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes tours. Its significant landmark is the Whipsnade White Lion, a chalk figure carved into the Dunstable Downs nearby.
