Walworth (London County Council constituency)
Walworth was a constituency used in elections to the London County Council (LCC) between 1889 and 1949. It elected two county councillors.
Creation and Boundaries:
The constituency was created by the Local Government Act 1888, which transformed the Metropolitan Board of Works into the London County Council. Walworth comprised the area of the civil parish of St Mary Newington, which roughly corresponds to the modern-day Walworth area of south London. The boundaries remained largely unchanged throughout the LCC's existence.
Political Representation:
Walworth's political representation on the LCC varied over time. Initially, progressive and moderate (Conservative) councillors represented the constituency. Later, the Labour Party gained significant strength, and the constituency became a Labour stronghold for much of the 20th century. Prominent Labour figures often represented Walworth.
Abolition:
The London County Council was abolished in 1965, and the Walworth constituency ceased to exist. The area was incorporated into new electoral divisions within the Greater London Council (GLC).
