Varedeh

Varedeh (וארדה) is a fictional character in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, primarily appearing in The Silmarillion. She is one of the Valar, the "Powers of Arda," and is considered the Queen of the Valar and the spouse of Manwë, the King of the Valar.

Varedeh is associated with light and illumination. Her name means "lofty" or "sublime" in Quenya, one of Tolkien's Elvish languages, reflecting her elevated position and her power over the stars. She is also known as Elbereth Gilthoniel to the Elves, a name of reverence and supplication, especially in times of need.

Varedeh's primary dwelling is on Taniquetil, the highest mountain in Valinor, the land of the Valar. From there, she can see across the world. She is credited with kindling the stars before the awakening of the Elves, gathering dew and fashioning it into bright constellations. The light of these stars is considered a defense against evil.

Her power is significant, and even Morgoth, the Dark Lord, feared her. Elves would invoke her name in times of trouble, believing that her light could ward off evil. The common Elvish greeting "Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!" (Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars!) is ultimately addressed to Varedeh, recognizing her role in creating the stars.
