Iran is a country in Western Asia. Officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran, it is bordered by Armenia and Azerbaijan to the northwest, the Caspian Sea to the north, Turkmenistan to the northeast, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south, and Turkey and Iraq to the west. Its central plateau is dominated by mountains, and its population of over 88 million makes it the 17th most populous country in the world. Tehran is the capital and largest city, as well as the country's economic, political, and cultural center.
Iran has a rich history, tracing back to ancient civilizations like Elam and the Medes. The Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus the Great, was one of the largest empires in antiquity. Subsequent empires, including the Parthian and Sasanian empires, shaped Iranian culture and influenced the surrounding regions. In the 7th century, the region was conquered by Arab Muslims, leading to the adoption of Islam. Persian culture significantly influenced the Islamic Golden Age.
In the 16th century, the Safavid dynasty established Shia Islam as the state religion. Iran remained a monarchy until the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the establishment of the current Islamic Republic. Iran possesses significant oil and natural gas reserves. The country has faced international scrutiny regarding its nuclear program and human rights record.
