V8 (band)
V8 was an influential Argentine heavy metal band formed in Buenos Aires in 1979. They are considered one of the pioneers of the Argentine heavy metal scene, paving the way for future generations of metal bands in the country.
V8 was founded by Ricardo Iorio (bass, vocals) and Ricardo "Chofa" Moreno (guitar), who initially explored a raw, aggressive sound influenced by early metal bands like Black Sabbath and Motörhead. They went through several lineup changes in their early years before solidifying a lineup that included Gustavo Rowek (drums) and Osvaldo Civile (guitar).
The band's lyrics often addressed social issues, religious criticism, and anti-establishment themes, setting them apart from other rock bands of the time. Their music combined heavy riffs with powerful vocals and a raw, unpolished sound.
V8 released three studio albums: Luchando Por El Metal (1983), Un Paso Más En La Batalla (1985), and El Fin de los Inicuos (1986). Luchando Por El Metal is considered a landmark album in Argentine heavy metal history.
Despite their growing popularity and influence, V8 faced numerous challenges, including censorship, lack of support from record labels, and internal conflicts. The band officially disbanded in 1987.
After the breakup of V8, its members went on to pursue various musical projects. Ricardo Iorio formed Hermética and later Almafuerte, both highly successful metal bands in Argentina. Osvaldo Civile formed Horcas, another significant band in the Argentine metal scene. Gustavo Rowek has remained active in music as a session musician and producer.
V8's legacy continues to resonate with Argentine metal fans, and they are remembered as a crucial band in the development of the country's heavy metal movement. Their music remains influential and is often cited by contemporary Argentine metal bands as an inspiration.
