Urbacodon
Urbacodon is a genus of extinct mammal that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Uzbekistan. It belongs to the order Multituberculata, a group of early mammals characterized by their multi-cusped teeth, adapted for grinding plant matter.
Urbacodon is known from isolated teeth discovered in the Bissekty Formation. These teeth exhibit features that place Urbacodon within the subfamily Cimolomyinae, a relatively advanced group of multituberculates.
The significance of Urbacodon lies in its contribution to understanding the geographic distribution and evolutionary history of multituberculates during the Late Cretaceous. Its presence in Central Asia indicates that these mammals were more widespread than previously thought and provides evidence for potential faunal exchange between Asia and other continents during this time. Further research on Urbacodon and other fossils from the Bissekty Formation may reveal more about the diversity and relationships of early mammals in Asia.
