USS Vandalia (1828)
The USS Vandalia was a United States Navy sloop-of-war launched in 1828. She was named for the settlement of Vandalia, Illinois, which at the time of her naming was the state capital. Vandalia saw extensive service throughout the 19th century, primarily on anti-piracy patrols in the Caribbean and service in the Pacific.
Initially armed with 18 guns, her armament varied throughout her career as naval technology advanced. She participated in several notable events, including engaging in suppression of the slave trade and protecting American interests in foreign ports.
One of the Vandalia's most significant periods of service occurred during the American Civil War. She served as part of the Union blockade of Confederate ports, helping to prevent supplies from reaching the Confederacy.
Tragically, the USS Vandalia was lost in Apia Harbor, Samoa, during the devastating Apia cyclone of March 15–16, 1889. The powerful storm wrecked or grounded numerous ships, including the Vandalia, which was driven onto a reef and sank. Many of her crew were lost in the disaster.
