Thomas Horne (priest)
Thomas Horne (fl. late 15th century) was an English cleric and canon lawyer who served as Dean of Salisbury from 1492 to 1502.
Little is definitively known about Horne's early life or career prior to his appointment as Dean. He is recorded as a Doctor of Canon Law (D.C.L.), indicating significant legal training and expertise within the ecclesiastical courts. This expertise likely played a key role in his selection for the Deanery.
As Dean of Salisbury, Horne would have been responsible for the administration of Salisbury Cathedral, including its finances, personnel, and the performance of divine service. He also likely participated in diocesan affairs and held a seat in the cathedral chapter.
Horne resigned from the Deanery in 1502. The reason for his resignation is not definitively documented, but could have been due to ill health, transfer to another position, or other unknown factors. The precise date and circumstances of his death are also unconfirmed.
Despite the relative lack of biographical detail, Thomas Horne's tenure as Dean of Salisbury represents a period in the history of that important religious institution during the late medieval period in England. Further research into Salisbury Cathedral records and other contemporary sources may reveal more information about his life and activities.
