The Prince of Graustark (film)

The Prince of Graustark is the title of several film adaptations based on the 1895 novel Graustark by George Barr McCutcheon. The novel centers on an American man who becomes embroiled in the affairs of the fictional European principality of Graustark, including a romantic involvement with the Princess.

There have been three notable film adaptations of Graustark:

  • Graustark (1915): A silent film starring Francis X. Bushman and Beverly Bayne. This version is now considered lost.

  • Graustark (1925): Another silent film adaptation, this time starring Norma Talmadge and Eugene O'Brien. This version survives and is available for viewing.

  • The Prince of Graustark (1916): Starring Bryant Washburn and Marguerite Clayton. It is also a silent film.

Each film adaptation presents its own interpretation of the source material, but generally includes elements of romance, adventure, and political intrigue, all set against the backdrop of the fictional Graustark. The 1925 version with Norma Talmadge is arguably the best-known and most readily accessible adaptation.
