Tenayuca

Tenayuca is a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican archaeological site located in the Valley of Mexico, about 10 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. It was the capital of the Chichimec polity of Tenayuca, and later came under the control of the Tepanec.

Tenayuca is best known for its well-preserved double pyramid, dedicated to the rain god Tlaloc and the sun/war god Huitzilopochtli. The pyramid features a stepped design and is adorned with serpent heads and other religious iconography. The site's architecture exhibits influences from various cultures, including the Toltec and Aztec.

The city of Tenayuca flourished from the 13th to the 15th centuries. It was eventually conquered by the Aztec Triple Alliance, which shifted its capital to nearby Tlacopan. Despite losing its political prominence, Tenayuca remained an important religious center.

Archaeological excavations at Tenayuca have revealed valuable insights into the religious practices, architecture, and daily life of the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Valley of Mexico. The site is open to the public and serves as a significant cultural and historical landmark.
