Su Nuraxi (Barumini)

Su Nuraxi (Barumini) is a Nuragic archaeological site in Sardinia, Italy. Located near the town of Barumini, in the province of South Sardinia, it represents the most complete example of a Nuragic complex, a type of fortified tower-village that flourished on the island from the Bronze Age (19th century BC) to the Roman period.

The site consists of a central, multi-towered nuraghe, surrounded by a village of huts, walls, wells, and other structures. The nuraghe itself evolved over several centuries, with the original single tower being augmented by four corner towers connected by curtain walls, forming a more complex bastion. Inside the towers and walls are chambers and corridors built using large basalt blocks.

The surrounding village grew around the nuraghe over time, showcasing the social and economic life of the Nuragic people. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of dwellings, communal spaces, workshops, and storage areas. Artifacts found at the site include pottery, metal tools, weapons, and ornaments, providing insights into Nuragic culture and their interactions with other Mediterranean civilizations.

Su Nuraxi (Barumini) was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Its well-preserved state and the comprehensive nature of the complex make it an invaluable resource for understanding Nuragic civilization and the history of Sardinia. The site is a popular tourist destination and an important center for archaeological research.
