State Highway 80 (New Zealand)

State Highway 80 (SH 80) is a New Zealand state highway running along the western side of Lake Pukaki in the Canterbury region of the South Island. It connects State Highway 8 (SH 8) near Pukaki Airport to Mount Cook Village (Aoraki / Mount Cook) within the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.

The highway is approximately 54 kilometers (34 miles) long and is known for its scenic views of Lake Pukaki and Aoraki / Mount Cook. It is a popular tourist route, providing access to various activities such as hiking, mountaineering, and sightseeing.

SH 80 is generally well-maintained, but drivers should be aware of potential hazards such as ice and snow during winter months. The road is mostly two-lane, with some sections passing through alpine terrain. Due to its proximity to a major tourist destination, traffic volumes can be high, particularly during peak season.

The highway terminates within Mount Cook Village, providing access to accommodation, visitor information centers, and trailheads for various walks and climbs. The Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and geological significance.
