Stargirl (film)

Stargirl is a 2020 American teen romance film directed by Julia Hart, based on the young adult novel of the same name by Jerry Spinelli. The film stars Grace VanderWaal in her acting debut, alongside Graham Verchere, Karan Brar, Maximiliano Hernández, Darby Stanchfield, and Giancarlo Esposito.

The film follows Leo Borlock (Verchere), an average high school student in Mica, Arizona, who is drawn to the unconventional and free-spirited Stargirl Caraway (VanderWaal). Stargirl arrives at Mica High and challenges the school's conformity, encouraging students to embrace their individuality. Leo, initially captivated by her uniqueness and popularity, finds himself grappling with the social consequences of their relationship as Stargirl's unconventionality eventually leads to backlash from the community. The film explores themes of conformity versus individuality, self-acceptance, and the challenges of navigating social pressures during adolescence.

Stargirl premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on March 3, 2020, and was released on Disney+ on March 13, 2020. A sequel, Hollywood Stargirl, was released on Disney+ in 2022.
