St Matthew's Chapel (Iż-Żgħir)
St Matthew's Chapel, locally known as Iż-Żgħir (meaning "the small" in Maltese), is a small Roman Catholic chapel located in the limits of Qrendi, Malta. It is situated near the larger St Matthew's Parish Church, hence the distinction. While the larger church serves as the main parish church, Iż-Żgħir often plays host to smaller, more intimate services and devotions.
The chapel’s origins and precise construction date are not firmly established through surviving documentation. Local tradition and architectural style suggest it may date back several centuries. Its relatively simple design, typical of many smaller Maltese chapels, features a single altar and a modest facade.
The chapel remains in active use and is cared for by the local community. It holds particular significance for residents of Qrendi, serving as a place for personal prayer and small group religious activities, particularly during the feasts associated with St Matthew. It provides a contrast to the more formal and often crowded environment of the larger parish church.
The chapel is a cultural and religious landmark within the Qrendi landscape, reflecting the deep-rooted Catholic faith of the Maltese people and the historical importance of smaller, more accessible places of worship within village life.
