SM U-52

SM U-52 was a German Type U 51 U-boat built for the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned on July 6, 1916, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Hans Walther.

U-52 primarily operated in the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel, engaging in commerce raiding. Her notable actions included the sinking of numerous merchant ships, contributing to the Allied shipping losses. She was credited with sinking over 40 ships during her service.

On October 18, 1916, U-52 torpedoed and sank the British passenger liner Naldera off the south coast of Ireland. Although the ship sank quickly, most of the passengers and crew were rescued.

U-52 continued her operations until the end of the war. Following the Armistice in November 1918, she was surrendered to the Allies. She was later scuttled in the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Allied disposal of surrendered U-boats. The precise coordinates of her final resting place are not widely documented.
