Rose Gray

Rose Gray (1939 – 2010) was a British chef, food writer, and co-founder of The River Cafe, a celebrated Italian restaurant in London.

Gray, alongside Ruth Rogers, revolutionized British dining by introducing simple, seasonal Italian cuisine prepared with high-quality ingredients. She was known for her commitment to sourcing the best produce, olive oils, and other Italian specialties, emphasizing fresh flavors and unfussy presentation.

Prior to The River Cafe, Gray worked as a graphic designer and then a cook. She and Rogers began their collaboration by providing catering services.

The River Cafe opened in 1987 in a former oil storage facility on the banks of the River Thames. It quickly gained recognition for its innovative menu, stylish setting, and influential approach to Italian cooking. The restaurant became a training ground for many notable chefs, including Jamie Oliver, April Bloomfield, and Theo Randall.

Gray co-authored several acclaimed cookbooks with Ruth Rogers, including "The River Cafe Cookbook" (1995), which became a bestseller and established their culinary philosophy. Their cookbooks emphasized simple techniques, ingredient quality, and the joy of cooking.

Gray's influence on British cuisine is significant, shaping modern restaurant culture and inspiring home cooks to embrace seasonal ingredients and simple, flavorful dishes. She continued to work at The River Cafe until her death in 2010.
