Reimerswaal (city)

Reimerswaal was a medieval city located in the province of Zeeland, in the southwestern Netherlands. It existed on the eastern part of the island of Zuid-Beveland. Founded in the 13th century, it grew to become an important trading center, particularly known for its salt production and strategic location on trade routes.

Throughout the 16th century, Reimerswaal suffered from repeated flooding. A series of severe St. Felix's floods (particularly in 1530) and subsequent storm surges gradually eroded the land around the city. Despite efforts to reinforce the dikes, the constant inundation led to the city's decline.

By the early 17th century, Reimerswaal was largely abandoned, with its inhabitants relocating to higher ground and other settlements. Today, the remains of the city lie submerged beneath the waters of the Oosterschelde estuary. The lost city serves as a historical reminder of the ongoing struggle against the sea in the Netherlands. The name Reimerswaal now refers to a larger municipality in Zeeland that encompasses several villages, but the original city is not within its boundaries. Historical research and underwater archeology continue to uncover more information about the history and fate of this once-prominent trading hub.
