Red Meat (band)

Red Meat was an American cowpunk band formed in San Francisco, California, in the early 1990s. Characterized by their gritty, Bakersfield-inspired sound and themes of heartbreak, drinking, and the working class, they became a prominent fixture in the alternative country scene. The band's music blended honky-tonk, rockabilly, and punk rock influences.

Red Meat's core members included Smelvis Romley (vocals, guitar), Rick "Razor" Reynolds (guitar), and occasionally, various bassists and drummers. Throughout their career, they released several albums, including "Meat Your Maker," "Hot Sizzle Platter," and "We're Going to Hell." They toured extensively, building a loyal following with their energetic live performances.

The band's sound and aesthetic were a deliberate reaction against the slicker, more pop-oriented country music prevalent at the time. Their rough-edged sound and sardonic lyrics resonated with audiences seeking a more authentic and rebellious take on country music. Red Meat disbanded in the early 2000s, but their music continues to be appreciated by fans of alternative country and cowpunk. Smelvis Romley continued performing and recording music after the band's breakup.
