Ray Stehr

Ray Stehr (1913-1983) was an Australian rugby league footballer, coach, and administrator. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

Stehr played as a lock forward for the Eastern Suburbs (now Sydney Roosters) club in the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) from 1929 to 1946. He captained Eastern Suburbs from 1938 and also captained the New South Wales and Australian representative teams.

Stehr led Eastern Suburbs to five premierships in the 1930s, including three consecutive titles from 1935 to 1937. He also captained Australia to victory in the 1933-34 Ashes series against Great Britain.

After his playing career, Stehr coached Eastern Suburbs and the New South Wales team. He also served as an administrator for the Eastern Suburbs club and the NSWRFL.

Stehr was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2004 and named as one of the 13 inaugural Immortals of Australian rugby league in 2018. He is remembered for his toughness, skill, leadership, and contributions to the sport.
