Puchacze

Puchacze is the Polish plural form of the word "puchacz," which translates directly to "eagle-owl" in English. Specifically, it refers to multiple individuals of the species Bubo bubo, the Eurasian eagle-owl.

The Eurasian eagle-owl is one of the largest owl species in the world. Characterized by its prominent ear tufts (also called "feather horns"), striking orange eyes, and powerful build, it is a formidable predator found across a wide range of habitats in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. These habitats include forests, steppes, and rocky areas.

In Polish culture and folklore, the eagle-owl, and therefore the term "puchacz," often carries connotations of wisdom, mystery, and sometimes, even ominousness, similar to owls in other European traditions. They are apex predators, playing a crucial role in their respective ecosystems. Conservation efforts are ongoing in many areas to protect and support their populations.
