Placospermum

Placospermum is a monotypic genus of flowering plant belonging to the family Proteaceae. It contains only one species, Placospermum coriaceum. This species is a tall rainforest tree endemic to northeastern Queensland, Australia.

Placospermum coriaceum is characterized by its large, leathery leaves and its unusual fruit. The fruit is a woody capsule that splits open to release a single, large seed surrounded by a fleshy, flattened wing (a "placo-sperm," hence the name). This wing aids in wind dispersal of the seed.

The species is relatively rare and is restricted to specific rainforest habitats. It is of interest to botanists due to its unique morphology and its evolutionary relationship to other members of the Proteaceae family. Conservation efforts are in place to protect its habitat and ensure the survival of this unique species. The tree can reach heights of up to 30 meters. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, typical of many rainforest species that rely on insects or other animals for pollination.
