OpenStax
OpenStax is a non-profit educational initiative based at Rice University that publishes openly licensed textbooks and educational resources. Its primary goal is to improve access to education by providing high-quality, peer-reviewed learning materials that are free online and low-cost in print.
OpenStax textbooks cover a range of subjects, primarily at the high school and college levels. Popular subject areas include mathematics, science, social sciences, and humanities. These textbooks are developed by subject-matter experts and undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness.
The OpenStax model allows users to access and download the textbooks in various digital formats (such as PDF and EPUB) without cost. Users are also permitted to modify, adapt, and redistribute the content under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). Print copies of the textbooks are available for purchase at a minimal cost to cover printing and shipping.
Beyond textbooks, OpenStax also provides ancillary resources such as instructor solutions manuals, test banks, and PowerPoint slides to support educators in adopting and using their materials.
The initiative is funded by philanthropic organizations, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Charles Koch Foundation. OpenStax is committed to promoting affordable education and empowering students and educators globally.
