Omu Okwei

Omu Okwei (c. 1872 – 1943), also known as Omu Okwei of Osomari, was a prominent Igbo merchant queen and community leader from Osomari, in present-day Anambra State, Nigeria. She was a successful businesswoman who dominated the trade along the River Niger in the early 20th century.

Okwei's influence extended beyond economics. She held the title of "Omu," a prestigious female leadership position in Igbo society, particularly among the riverine communities. As Omu, she played a significant role in resolving disputes, maintaining social order, and representing the interests of women within her community. She was also involved in regulating markets and setting trade standards.

Her wealth and status allowed her to wield considerable political power, interacting with both the local Igbo population and the British colonial authorities. Okwei cleverly navigated the complexities of colonial rule, using her position to advocate for her people and protect their economic interests.
