Nibiru (album)
Nibiru is the sixth studio album by the American metal band High on Fire, released in 2007 on Relapse Records.
Overview:
Nibiru represents a significant stylistic shift for High on Fire, incorporating more sludge metal and doom metal elements into their established stoner metal and thrash metal sound. It's often considered one of their heaviest and most experimental albums. Lyrically, the album continues the band's exploration of themes relating to mythology, ancient civilizations, and apocalyptic scenarios, with a particular emphasis on the concept of the fictional planet Nibiru colliding with Earth, as popularized by Zecharia Sitchin's theories.
Musical Style:
The album's sound is characterized by its slower tempos, denser instrumentation, and more prominent use of feedback and distortion compared to High on Fire's earlier work. Matt Pike's vocals are also notably rawer and more guttural on Nibiru. While still maintaining the band's signature high-energy riffing, Nibiru prioritizes atmosphere and sonic weight.
