Negro Creek (South Dakota)

Negro Creek is the former name of a stream located in South Dakota. The creek was officially renamed to Lakota Creek in 2021 following a vote by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The original name was considered offensive and derogatory due to the term "Negro," a historically charged word used to refer to Black people. The renaming initiative was part of a larger effort to remove racially insensitive names from geographic features across the United States. Lakota Creek flows through Bennett County and is named in honor of the Lakota people, who are indigenous to the region.
