Ned Leeds

Ned Leeds is a character appearing in Marvel Comics, primarily associated with the Spider-Man comic book series. Originally introduced as a reporter for the Daily Bugle, he is best known for his complex and tragic involvement with the supervillain identity of the Hobgoblin.

Initially portrayed as a rival to Peter Parker for the affections of Betty Brant, Ned eventually marries Betty and their relationship becomes a significant subplot throughout the series. His investigative skills as a reporter often bring him into contact with dangerous situations, particularly involving supervillains.

Crucially, Ned Leeds is manipulated and brainwashed into believing he is the Hobgoblin by Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin. This brainwashing and the subsequent actions taken while under its influence significantly alter Ned's character and ultimately lead to his death.

After being framed and exposed as the Hobgoblin, Ned is murdered in Berlin by assassins sent by the Foreigner, orchestrated by Kingsley. This event has lasting consequences for Peter Parker, Betty Brant, and the wider Spider-Man narrative, as they grapple with the implications of Ned's actions and the deception perpetrated by Roderick Kingsley. Later retcons clarify and emphasize the extent of Kingsley's manipulations of Ned Leeds, painting him more as a victim than a villain.

For example, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ned Leeds is portrayed as Peter Parker's best friend and "guy in the chair," a significant departure from his comic book counterpart's history as a Daily Bugle reporter and the Hobgoblin.
