Moukahla

A moukahla (also spelled mukkahla or mokala) is a type of powder flask or priming flask, originating primarily from North Africa and the Middle East, used to hold gunpowder for muzzle-loading firearms, particularly matchlock and flintlock rifles and pistols. They are characterized by their often ornate designs and decorations, typically crafted from materials such as horn, bone, leather, metal (brass, silver), and wood.

The moukahla served a crucial purpose: safely and controllably dispensing a small amount of fine-grained gunpowder into the flash pan of a firearm prior to firing. This priming charge, ignited by the spark from the match or flint, would then ignite the main charge within the barrel, propelling the projectile.

The design of a moukahla typically includes a body (the container for the gunpowder), a nozzle or spout for dispensing the powder, and a stopper or valve to prevent accidental spillage. Some moukahlah have measuring devices integrated into the nozzle to deliver consistent amounts of powder for each shot.

Due to their visibility and function, moukahlah were often adorned with intricate carvings, inlays, and engravings, reflecting the social status and artistic preferences of their owners. The decorations can vary widely, incorporating geometric patterns, floral motifs, representations of animals, or even scenes from daily life. Consequently, moukahlah are collected not just as historical firearm accessories but also as examples of artistic craftsmanship from the regions where they were produced.
