Marzouki
Marzouki refers primarily to Moncef Marzouki, a Tunisian human rights activist, physician, and politician. He served as the President of Tunisia from 2011 to 2014, following the Arab Spring revolution that ousted Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Marzouki was a long-time opponent of Ben Ali's regime and spent time in exile. Following the revolution, he returned to Tunisia and participated in the political transition. He was elected president by the Constituent Assembly in December 2011.
During his presidency, Marzouki oversaw the drafting and adoption of a new Tunisian constitution in 2014, considered one of the most progressive in the Arab world. His tenure was marked by efforts to consolidate democratic institutions and address the social and economic challenges facing Tunisia.
He unsuccessfully ran for re-election in 2014, losing to Beji Caid Essebsi. Since leaving office, Marzouki has remained politically active, often critical of subsequent governments in Tunisia. His views are frequently expressed through public statements and writings. He is often viewed as a figurehead of the secular, democratic movement in Tunisia.
