Liang Jun (tractor driver)
Liang Jun (梁军) was a prominent Chinese tractor driver who became a symbol of the country's industrialization and agricultural modernization efforts during the mid-20th century.
Liang Jun was born in Heilongjiang province. She gained national recognition as the leader of China's first female tractor team. This team was formed in 1948 and played a significant role in the agricultural development of the region. Liang Jun became a symbol of the changing roles of women in Chinese society and the modernization of agricultural practices.
Her image was featured on the first Chinese one-yuan banknote issued in the third series of renminbi in 1962, cementing her place in Chinese popular culture and historical memory. This depiction highlights the importance placed on agriculture and the working class in the socialist ideology of the time. Liang Jun's story was widely publicized and served as an inspiration for women across the country to participate in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Liang Jun continued to work in agricultural administration and education, contributing to the development of agricultural machinery technology in China. Her contributions extended beyond operating machinery; she also played a role in promoting modern farming techniques and advocating for increased investment in agricultural development. She died in 2013.
