Lewis Atterbury (chaplain)
Lewis Atterbury (1656 – 20 September 1731) was an English clergyman and writer. He was the son of Francis Atterbury the elder, rector of Milton Keynes, and uncle of Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester.
Atterbury was born in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, and educated at Westminster School before matriculating at Christ Church, Oxford in 1675, graduating B.A. in 1679 and M.A. in 1682. He took holy orders and became chaplain to King William and Queen Mary, as well as preacher at the Rolls Chapel. He held the rectories of Sywell, Northamptonshire, and High Roding, Essex, and was appointed a prebendary of Exeter Cathedral in 1704.
Atterbury was a prolific writer of sermons and theological tracts. He died in London and was buried at High Roding. His publications include volumes of sermons and works such as "Ten Sermons Preached at the Rolls Chapel" (1709).
