  • Vertical Clouds: Extend through multiple altitude layers. Cumulus (Cu) and cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds fall into this category. Cumulonimbus clouds are associated with thunderstorms and heavy precipitation.

Formation:

Clouds form when moist air rises and cools. As the air rises, it expands and cools, leading to condensation of water vapor onto condensation nuclei (tiny particles such as dust, pollen, or salt). Different mechanisms can cause air to rise, including:

  • Convection: Warm air rising due to heating of the Earth's surface.
  • Orographic Lift: Air forced to rise over mountains.
  • Frontal Lift: Warm air rising over cooler, denser air along a weather front.
  • Convergence: Air flowing together from different directions, forcing it to rise.

Impact on Weather:

Clouds have a significant impact on weather patterns. They can block incoming solar radiation, resulting in cooler temperatures. They also release precipitation in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. The type and amount of precipitation depend on factors such as cloud type, temperature, and atmospheric conditions.
