Lanark (UK Parliament constituency)
Lanark was a county constituency in Lanarkshire, Scotland, which elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It existed from 1868 to 1918, and then as a renamed form from 1983 to 2005.
History:
1868-1918: The constituency was created as part of the redistribution of seats in 1868. It covered the middle and upper parts of Lanarkshire, excluding the burghs of Lanark, Hamilton and Airdrie. Politically, it was generally considered a Conservative leaning seat, although Liberal candidates also had successes.
1918 Abolition: The constituency was abolished in 1918 as part of further redistribution, and its territory was primarily divided between the Motherwell and Hamilton and Bothwell constituencies.
1983-2005 Re-creation and Renaming: The constituency was re-established in 1983, largely incorporating territory from the former Lanarkshire constituencies. In this incarnation, it typically elected Labour MPs. In 2005, as part of further boundary changes, the constituency was renamed as Lanark and Hamilton East.
Boundaries:
The boundaries of the Lanark constituency changed over time, reflecting population shifts and electoral reforms. Initially encompassing a large rural area of Lanarkshire, later iterations were more compact and included more urban areas. Details of specific boundary revisions can be found in relevant Parliamentary boundary commission reports.
