La Cage aux Folles (film)

La Cage aux Folles is a 1978 Franco-Italian comedy film directed by Édouard Molinaro, based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret. The film stars Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault.

The plot revolves around Renato Baldi (Tognazzi), a nightclub owner in Saint-Tropez, and his partner, Albin Mougeotte (Serrault), who is the star female impersonator of Renato's club, La Cage aux Folles. Their unconventional lifestyle is thrown into chaos when Renato's son, Laurent, announces his engagement to Muriel, the daughter of a highly conservative politician, Simone Charrier.

To meet the prospective in-laws, Renato and Albin must attempt to present themselves as a "normal" family, requiring Albin to temporarily suppress his flamboyant personality and forcing Renato to pass Albin off as his apartment manager. The humor stems from the clash between the couple's flamboyant lifestyle and the conservative values of Muriel's parents, as well as the challenges they face in trying to conform to societal expectations.

The film was a critical and commercial success, nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Costume Design. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Serrault's performance as Albin is particularly renowned.

La Cage aux Folles has been credited with helping to broaden the acceptance of homosexuality in mainstream culture and is considered a landmark film in LGBTQ+ cinema. The film's success also led to two sequels, La Cage aux Folles II (1980) and La Cage aux Folles 3: The Wedding (1985), and inspired the hit Broadway musical of the same name.
