Koksar
Koksar is a village located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,140 meters (10,302 feet) above sea level, it serves as a crucial point on the Manali-Leh highway, particularly when the Rohtang Pass is open. Koksar is often the first village encountered in the Lahaul Valley when travelling from Manali.
Historically, Koksar was a check post and rescue camp for travellers crossing the Rohtang Pass. It is known for its harsh weather conditions, especially during winter when the pass is closed due to heavy snowfall, effectively cutting off road access to the region. During this time, Koksar becomes largely deserted.
The village is a starting point for several trekking routes and offers basic accommodation and food facilities for tourists during the summer months. Due to its strategic location, Koksar plays a significant role in the logistical support for travel to higher altitudes in the Himalayas.
