José Romero (bullfighter)
José Romero (born in Seville, Spain, date unknown, died in Madrid, Spain, November 8, 1902) was a Spanish bullfighter (matador) of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He belonged to a prominent bullfighting dynasty; his father was Julián Romero, and his brother, Francisco Romero, was also a matador. José Romero was known for his valor and skill, particularly with the capote (cape) and banderillas (decorated darts). He took the alternativa (official ceremony of becoming a matador) in Madrid on July 24, 1879. Romero enjoyed a successful, though not exceptionally long, career, often performing in Madrid. He died as a result of a wound he sustained during a bullfight in Madrid. His death, along with the deaths of other matadors during that era, highlighted the inherent dangers of the profession.
