John Scully (Jesuit)
John Scully (born 1929, died 2021) was an American Jesuit priest, professor, and biblical scholar specializing in the Hebrew Bible, particularly the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomistic History. He taught Old Testament at various institutions, including Weston Jesuit School of Theology (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. He was known for his expertise in biblical Hebrew and his commitment to historical-critical methods of biblical interpretation. He held a doctorate in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures from Harvard University. Throughout his career, Scully contributed to scholarly discussions concerning the formation of the Old Testament and the relationship between the biblical text and the ancient Near Eastern world.
