John Oswald (activist)

John Oswald (born 1953) is a Canadian anti-poverty activist and community organizer. He is best known for his work with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), a direct action group focused on issues such as homelessness, social assistance, and poverty.

Oswald became involved in activism in the 1980s, working with various social justice organizations. He joined OCAP in the early 1990s and quickly became a prominent figure within the organization. His activism is characterized by a confrontational, direct action approach, often involving demonstrations, protests, and occupations.

Oswald has been arrested numerous times for his involvement in protests and acts of civil disobedience. He has consistently defended his actions as necessary to challenge systemic injustice and advocate for the rights of marginalized communities. His advocacy often focuses on the immediate needs of people experiencing poverty, such as access to housing, food, and adequate social assistance.

He has been a vocal critic of government policies related to social welfare and has argued for significant increases in social assistance rates, affordable housing, and other measures to combat poverty. Oswald has also been involved in campaigns against police brutality and for the rights of refugees and immigrants.

Despite criticisms and legal challenges, Oswald remains active in anti-poverty organizing and continues to advocate for social change through direct action and community mobilization. His work has had a significant impact on the political landscape of Ontario, raising awareness of poverty and challenging the status quo.
