John Ormsby Vandeleur (MP for Granard)
John Ormsby Vandeleur (1765 – 1828) was an Irish politician and soldier. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Granard in County Longford, Ireland.
Vandeleur belonged to a prominent Irish family. He was commissioned into the British Army and served with distinction, rising to the rank of Major-General. His military service included time in India.
As MP for Granard, Vandeleur sat in the Irish House of Commons before the Act of Union in 1801. His parliamentary activities primarily related to Irish affairs during a turbulent period in Irish history. Following the Act of Union, which dissolved the Irish Parliament and created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Vandeleur did not continue as a member of the UK Parliament.
He was succeeded in the Vandeleur family line by several descendants who continued to hold positions of importance in Irish society. His son, Crofton Moore Vandeleur (1793-1881), also became a prominent figure.
