John Burton (antiquary)
John Burton (1696-1771) was an English antiquarian and scholar. He was born in Yorkshire and educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, where he became a Fellow. Burton was known for his extensive knowledge of classical literature and history, as well as his interest in English antiquities. He held several ecclesiastical positions, including master of Eton College (1752-1768). His major publications included editions of Greek texts, theological works, and writings on classical archaeology. He is particularly remembered for his contributions to the study of Hadrian's Wall and Roman Britain. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and maintained correspondence with other leading scholars of his day. His work provided valuable insights into the history and culture of the ancient world and early Britain.
