James Phillips (Canadian musician)

James Phillips (born 1959, died 2016) was a Canadian musician, best known as a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist associated with the Vancouver punk and alternative music scenes. He was a pivotal figure in the city's vibrant musical landscape from the late 1970s through the early 2000s.

Phillips first gained prominence as a member of The Subhumans, a politically charged punk band that was a staple of the Vancouver punk scene. His songwriting contributions to The Subhumans demonstrated his sharp wit and social commentary.

Following his departure from The Subhumans, Phillips embarked on a solo career, often performing under the name "The U.G. Men," although the moniker sometimes referred to a rotating cast of backing musicians. His solo work saw him explore a wider range of musical styles, incorporating elements of rock and roll, country, and blues, while maintaining his signature lyrical cynicism and dark humor.

Throughout his career, Phillips was respected for his independent spirit and commitment to artistic integrity. He released several albums and EPs, often on independent labels, showcasing his distinctive voice and songwriting talent. He continued to perform and record music until his death in 2016, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to influence musicians in Vancouver and beyond.

His notable albums include "James Phillips" (also known as "The Green Album") and "Dead Release." His work is characterized by themes of urban alienation, societal critique, and personal reflection, all delivered with a sardonic edge.
