Iolu Abil

Iolu Abil (born 1942, Vanua Lava, Banks Islands) was the Governor-General of Vanuatu from 2009 to 2014. He was elected by Parliament on September 2, 2009, and officially assumed office on September 22, 2009.

Abil, an independent politician, had previously served as a Member of Parliament. His selection as Governor-General followed a period of political instability and several unsuccessful attempts to elect a candidate.

During his tenure as Governor-General, Abil's primary responsibilities were ceremonial, representing the Head of State in Vanuatu. These duties included assenting to legislation, appointing judges, and representing Vanuatu at international events.

His term concluded in September 2014, after which he was succeeded by Baldwin Lonsdale.
