Interstate 635 (Texas)
Interstate 635 (I-635), also known as the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway (LBJ Freeway), is an Interstate Highway loop encircling Dallas, Texas. It provides a major east-west route through the northern suburbs of Dallas, connecting Interstate 35E (Stemmons Freeway) on both the west and east sides of the city.
The highway runs through several municipalities, including Balch Springs, Mesquite, Garland, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Addison, and Irving. It serves as a vital transportation artery for commuters and freight traffic moving through the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Key features of I-635 include its significant number of interchanges with other major highways, such as the Dallas North Tollway, U.S. Highway 75 (Central Expressway), Interstate 30, and State Highway 190 (President George Bush Turnpike). The highway has been subject to extensive construction and expansion projects to address increasing traffic volume, including the LBJ Express project, which added managed toll lanes along much of its length.
The LBJ Freeway is named after former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. Due to heavy congestion and traffic volume, I-635 is often a challenging route for drivers, especially during peak hours. It serves as a crucial component of the Dallas area's transportation network and plays a significant role in regional commerce and mobility.
