Hwang Hee

Hwang Hee (Korean: 황희, Hanja: 黃喜; 1363 – 1452) was a prominent Korean government official and scholar-bureaucrat during the Joseon Dynasty. He served as Chief State Councillor (Yeonguijeong, 領議政) for a record-breaking 24 years, under Kings Taejong, Sejong, and Munjong.

Hwang Hee passed the civil service examination at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Joseon bureaucracy. He was known for his integrity, pragmatism, and ability to resolve difficult political situations. Although sometimes criticized for his leniency and tolerance, particularly towards corrupt officials, he is generally regarded as one of the most influential and respected figures in Joseon history.

Hwang Hee played a significant role in solidifying the foundations of the Joseon Dynasty and is credited with contributing to the golden age of King Sejong's reign. His advice and guidance were instrumental in many key policies and projects, including tax reform, agricultural development, and the implementation of Confucian ideals in governance. His long tenure in the highest office of the state ensured stability and continuity during a crucial period of the dynasty's early history. He is often remembered as a symbol of virtuous and capable leadership, albeit one with complex aspects.
