Hun Manet

Hun Manet is a Cambodian politician and military officer who has served as the Prime Minister of Cambodia since August 2023. He is the eldest son of Hun Sen, who served as Prime Minister for over 38 years.

Hun Manet received his education in the United States, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1999. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics from New York University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Bristol.

Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Hun Manet held high-ranking positions within the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant General. He served as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the RCAF and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army. His military career has been marked by his involvement in counter-terrorism efforts and border security.

Hun Manet's appointment as Prime Minister followed the 2023 Cambodian general election, in which the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won a landslide victory. The election has been criticized by international observers for lacking fairness and genuine opposition. Hun Sen's prior announcement of his intention to transfer power to Hun Manet effectively paved the way for the succession.

As Prime Minister, Hun Manet has pledged to continue his father's policies while also introducing new initiatives focused on economic development, good governance, and strengthening Cambodia's international relations. His leadership is expected to bring generational change to Cambodian politics, although the extent of this change and the continuity of CPP rule remain subjects of ongoing observation and analysis.
