Hirate

Hirate (平手) refers to an open-handed technique in Japanese martial arts. It literally translates to "flat hand." In contrast to fist strikes (ken), hirate techniques utilize the palm, heel of the hand, or fingers to deliver strikes, blocks, or grabs.

The term can encompass a range of specific techniques depending on the martial art. For example, in karate, hirate can refer to specific palm strikes aimed at vulnerable areas. In Aikido, it might be used to describe a hand position used in joint locks or throws.
