Héctor Olivera (baseball)
Héctor Olivera Amaro (born April 5, 1985) is a Cuban former professional baseball infielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves.
Olivera began his professional baseball career in Cuba, playing for the Santiago de Cuba team in the Cuban National Series from 2003 to 2014. He was regarded as one of the top players in Cuba and represented the country in international competitions.
In 2015, Olivera defected from Cuba and signed a six-year, $62.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was primarily a second baseman but also played third base. He made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in September 2015.
In July 2015, Olivera was traded to the Atlanta Braves, along with Paco Rodriguez and Zachary Bird, in exchange for Alex Wood, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, Bronson Arroyo, and Jose Peraza. He played for the Braves in the second half of the 2015 season and the beginning of the 2016 season.
In April 2016, Olivera was arrested and charged with assaulting a woman. He was subsequently placed on administrative leave by MLB and ultimately suspended. Following his suspension, the Braves released him. He later played in the Mexican League.
Olivera's career was marked by both his potential and his legal troubles. His performance on the field was overshadowed by the assault allegations, effectively ending his MLB career.
