Gonzen
Gonzen is a mountain in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of St. Gallen, near the border with Liechtenstein. It rises to an elevation of 1,829 meters (6,001 feet).
The Gonzen is known for its historical iron ore mine, the Gonzen Mine (German: Eisenerzbergwerk Gonzen). Mining activities took place there for centuries, with significant periods of operation from the 17th century until its closure in 1966. The mine played a crucial role in supplying iron ore to various industries in Switzerland and neighboring countries.
Today, the Gonzen Mine is a museum and tourist attraction. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the underground tunnels, learn about the mining techniques used throughout history, and discover the geological features of the area.
The surrounding area of the Gonzen offers hiking trails and scenic viewpoints. The mountain provides views of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding alpine landscape.
