George Washington House (Barbados)

George Washington House is a historic plantation house located in Bridgetown, Barbados. It is significant as the only house outside of the United States that George Washington, the first President of the United States, is known to have resided in. He stayed there with his brother Lawrence for nearly two months in 1751.

The house provides insight into 18th-century plantation life in Barbados and offers exhibits exploring the history of the Washington family's visit and its connection to the transatlantic slave trade. The house itself is a Georgian-style building and has been restored to reflect its appearance during Washington's stay.

Today, George Washington House is a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison property. Visitors can tour the house, view historical artifacts, and learn about the impact of Washington's time in Barbados on his life and subsequent career. Exhibits cover topics such as medicine, sugar production, and the social and political context of the time. The property includes a replica of a slave hut, highlighting the enslaved people who worked and lived on the plantation. The museum aims to offer a balanced and historically accurate portrayal of the period.
