Fotoform

Fotoform was a British photographic collective founded in 1949 by four photographers: Nigel Henderson, Toni del Renzio, Peter Stroud, and Alison (later known as Alison Skyrme and Alison Stroud). The group's primary objective was to explore and promote experimental and abstract photography, influenced by Surrealism, Constructivism, and other avant-garde movements.

Fotoform sought to break away from traditional documentary and pictorialist styles, embracing techniques such as photomontage, close-up photography, abstract compositions, and experimentation with darkroom processes like solarization and multiple exposures. Their work often explored themes of texture, form, and pattern, aiming to challenge conventional perceptions of reality.

The group held several exhibitions in the early 1950s, showcasing their innovative approach to photography. Although Fotoform disbanded in 1951 after only a short period of activity, its members continued to pursue individual careers in photography and art, leaving a lasting impact on the development of experimental photography in Britain. Their influence can be seen in subsequent generations of photographers who explored the boundaries of the medium. The Fotoform archives are valuable resources for understanding the post-war British art scene and the evolution of photographic expression.
